Basketball season opens; girls fall The Lady Hornets, in their first basketball outing of the 2007-08 season, fell to Oglesby, 64-57 in recent action. "Although we did not come out with a win, there were a lot of positives," said Coach Brandy Eckermann. "I saw a big improvement from the girls over last year. We moved the ball well." The coach said turnovers were low for so early in the season, and the points were higher than any game last year. Taylor Bradley led all Lady Hornet scorers with 24 points, and Maria Jasso added 13. Jeanette Rosales contributed 10 points. "This group of girls is young and eager to play," said Eckermann. "They work hard in practice and it really showed. We still have a few things to work on, but as the season continues, I believe we will improve and be able to compete a little better in district this year." The girls were 50 percent at the free-throw line. "We started out slow in the first quarter, and had a rough start in the third quarter," said the coach. "We outscored them in the second and fourth quarters." Rosales, Patricia Viera and Elisha Whisenhunt shot 50 percent from the free-throw line, and Bradley was 100 percent. * * * In junior varsity action, Oglesby almost doubled the Lady Hornets, 33-17. Cassidy Wienecke and Kylie Bradley scored six points on the night. "These girls are young and really worked hard out on the court," said Eckermann. "As they get more playing time, they will improve and be able to play with more confidence." Wienecke did a great job shooting with a 100 percent at the freethrow line, said the coach. Hannah Purser made two of three free throws. As a team, the girls were 50 percent at the freethrow line. |
