Trinity tries to follow up 'Miracle'
College Football

A handful of former Lampasas High School football players could see their share of action in college games this weekend.

Centre College at Trinity University, 1:30 p.m.: Last week, Trinity escaped against Millsaps University with the help of what is being dubbed "The Mississippi Miracle."

The Tigers (7-1 overall, 4-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletics Conference) made national TV highlights by beating Millsaps, 28- 24, with a 61-yard pass play that included 15 laterals.

Former Badger Chris Coleman starred for the Tigers, catching eight passes for 119 yards in the thriller. On Saturday, Coleman will try to help lead Trinity against Centre (Ky.) College (5-3, 3-2).

Trinity helped its conference title hopes with last Saturday's win, pulling within a half game of Millsaps (7-1, 5-1). Millsaps entered the contest ranked one spot ahead of Trinity (No. 7) in the regional rankings. The top six teams in the region advance to the Division III playoffs.

On the season, Coleman has caught 36 passes for 605 yards and two touchdowns.

University of Central Oklahoma at West Texas A&M, 6 p.m.: Keith Null's West Texas A&M Buffaloes are sitting pretty at No. 3 in the NCAA Division II Southwest Region rankings.

A home win against Central Oklahoma would all but seal the Buffaloes' third consecutive playoff berth and put them one step closer to a third straight Lone Star Conference title.

WTAMU (9-0 overall, 7-0 in the LSC, 5-0 in the LSC South) would win the title outright with a win Saturday (4-4, 4-3, 3-1 in the LSC North) and a win at Tarleton State on Nov. 10. A loss in either game still would have them in position for a share of the title.

Null did not play in last week's 38-17 win against Angelo State because of an ankle injury he played through in a 41-31 victory at Abilene Christian two weeks ago. Null's status will be a game-time decision on Saturday.

He has thrown for 2,814 yards and 29 touchdowns this year.

Tarleton State at Angelo State, 6 p.m.: The Rams will try to put a dent in the Texans' Lone Star Conference title hopes with an upset on Saturday.

ASU (2-6 overall, 2-5 in the LSC, 1-3 in the LSC South) is coming off a 38-17 loss at West Texas A&M. TSU (8-1, 6-1, 3-1) had a 70-63 loss to Abilene Christian last week.

Former Badgers Ty Brock and Will Mezger will suit up for the Rams.

East Texas Baptist at Mary Hardin-Baylor, 1 p.m.: The Cru will try to rebound from a decisive 41-14 loss at University of Wisconsin Whitewater.

UMHB (7-1 overall, 6-0 in the American Southwest Conference) and its powerful running game would clinch a conference title with a win over second-place ETB (5-4, 5-2).

Former Badger Kristen Leverett has recorded eight solo tackles and 14 assists on the season. Twin brother Kirsten Leverett has two solos and two assists.
