When Pflugerville Hendrickson rolled into town Friday, the Lampasas football team appeared to have fixed much of what had been ailing the team the last three weeks.
The short passing game was sharp, and with Vann Millican back under center after missing three games, the Badger offense protected the football.
But one running theme continued, as it seemed like every time the offense started to get rolling, little yellow hankies made it screech to a halt. Those penalties, combined with playoff hopes that inspired a strong Hendrickson effort, resulted in a 42-7 loss at Badger Field.

Lampasas, which was officially eliminated from playoff contention last week, fell to 0-8 overall and 0-5 in District 25-4A. Hendrickson (3- 5, 3-2) watched its playoff hopes improve as Vista Ridge knocked off Burnet on Friday.
The Badgers committed seven penalties for 70 yards, but the timing of a few compounded the total.
"We're out there making plays, and it seems like every time we get something going, they throw a flag," LHS head coach Ryan Bailey said. "The kids start to see it as the world is out to get them. It's just another life lesson: Life's not always fair, and overcoming adversity is a big part of it."

The first Badger penalty was a holding call that nullified a thirddown conversion on the opening series. Hendrickson capitalized on the good field position that resulted, driving 52 yards -- with the help of a 15-yard face-mask penalty -- on 10 plays. Marquese Dunn, who ran for 106 yards and three touchdowns, capped the drive with a 5- yard run on an option to the right.
Dunn and backfield mate Delvonta Glenn combined for 255 yards on the night. Glenn gained the majority of his yardage on the perimeter, using deceptive speed to bounce off-tackle plays to the sideline. Glenn, a fire hydrant with churning legs, did most of his damage inside, bouncing and spinning off tacklers.
"They were huge (on the offensive line)," Bailey said. "We're so small up front, people just line up and run right at us. The linebackers and defensive backs are playing well, and the defensive line is giving it everything they've got, but they're just outmanned."
The Badgers were down 14-0 just 21 seconds after Dunn's first score. Jarrod Bowen fumbled the ensuing kickoff, which gave Hendrickson the ball at the Lampasas 27. Hendrickson quarterback Spencer Otto took advantage of the momentum by hitting Michael Reese for a 27-yard touchdown on the first play after the turnover.
An illegal block on the next kickoff gave the Badgers the ball at their own 20. They pushed out to midfield before Seth Fry's punt gave the Hawks 80 yards to overcome. Behind completions of 23 and 17 yards from Otto, they did just that when Dunn capped an eight-play drive with a 9-yard score as time expired in the first quarter.
On the next drive, Lampasas again moved to midfield and appeared poised to cut into the lead when Millican connected with Ryan Abbott for a 23-yard pass inside the Hawks' 30. A holding call killed the play and the drive, and Hendrickson drove 81 yards on its ensuing possession to all but put the game away at 28-0 on a 34-yard touchdown from Otto to Chris Roddy.
Things got worse for the Badgers on the subsequent drive. On third and three from midfield, Millican had a pass deflected at the line of scrimmage. The ball fell into the arms of Hendrickson's Tason Robinson, who went 53 yards to make it 35-0 with 4:31 remaining in the half.
The Badgers came out with Bowen at quarterback on the next drive, and a 39-yard run from Brode DuBose highlighted a fiveplay, 61-yard scoring drive. Bowen pulled the Badgers to 35-7 with 1:38 left before the break with a 10-yard run.
"The only reason I put Bowen in was because they went to man coverage, and it lent itself to success out of that formation," Bailey said. "I thought Vann threw the ball well tonight -- even his interception was on a tipped pass. Vann's gaining experience, and he's getting better all the time."
The Badgers got the ball back again in Hawks territory after Melvin Batiste swatted the football away from a scrambling Otto, and Travis Jordan recovered it at the 38, but Lampasas could not convert the turnover into points.
Dunn added another touchdown from 11 yards out in the third quar- ter to close out the scoring. From that point on, yellow flags -- there were 18 in all, not including five declined penalties -- stalled the offensive efforts of both teams.
Millican finished the game 12-of- 23 for 102 yards. DuBose led the team with 58 rushing yards. Bowen caught six passes for 53 yards and ran for 45. Fry had four pass receptions for 40 yards.
The Badgers are on the road Friday against Vista Ridge.
