TOO MUCH
Austin Lake Travis 58, Lampasas 14
Gilbert leads high-powered Cavaliers offense past Badgers

Top: Lampasas' Ryan Abbott makes an open-field tackle against Chris Aydam to set up a fourth and three in the second quarter of Friday's 58-14 loss at Lake Travis, but the Cavaliers converted the fourth-down attempt on their way to taking a 31-0 lead. Right: LHS head coach Ryan Bailey challenges his team after the game to remain focused not on the first six games of the season but instead on the remaining four. Far right: LHS receiver Jarrod Bowen shows his disappointment after the loss. Bowen was held to one catch for 28 yards and one rush for zero yards in the game.
Austin Lake Travis was billed to have had one of the top offenses in the region heading into Friday night's game against Lampasas.

It did nothing to dispute that billing.

The only thing that stopped the Lake Travis offense on Friday night was a kneel-down to end the game. The Cavaliers (5-1, 3-0) scored on all 10 of their possessions in a 58-14 win against Lampasas at Cavalier Field.

Junior quarterback Garret Gilbert, whose father Gale played six seasons in the NFLwith Seattle, Buffalo and San Diego, completed 22 of 29 passes for 303 yards and four touchdowns.

"That kid is going to make some money playing football, just like his dad," LHS coach Ryan Bailey said. "He's that good, and they're that good. Our guys knew coming in we were outmanned at every position, but they played hard on every snap. They never quit. They're proud of themselves, and they should be."

The Badgers (0-6, 0-3) played like a team with nothing to lose, mixing up defensive-front looks and blitzing from every angle, but Gilbert had an answer for almost every blitz. He lofted perfect screen passes over the blitz with defenders in his face or rolled outside the pocket and made crisp, accurate throws on the run. He connected with Jason Bird 10 times, including touchdowns of 20, 28 and 5 yards.

The Cavaliers also used the running game to nullify the blitz. Junior running back Chris Aydam ran for 100 of the Cavaliers' 177 rushing yards, including a 30-yard touchdown up the gut that gave his team a 38-7 lead with 3:24 left in the first half. Aydam also scored on an 11-yard run.

The Cavaliers took a 28-0 lead into the second quarter, scoring three times on offense and once on defense. The defensive touchdown came with Lampasas moving the ball and looking to cut the Cavalier lead to 14-7.

After picking up two first downs and moving into Cavalier territory at the 45, junior LHS quarterback Ryder Brown was sacked at his own 45. Although his arm was moving forward with the ball, the football popped out of his hand and was ruled a fumble. Linebacker Sean Kelley picked it up and raced 45 yards for the score.

The Cavaliers took a 31-0 lead on Thomas Rebold's 47-yard field goal with 8:28 left in the half before the Lampasas offense found the end zone.

Cole Ball returned the ensuing kickoff from five yards deep in the end zone to the 33 to give the Badgers good field position. Brown then led a five-play, 65-yard drive, capped by a 36-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan VanLiew in the left side of the end zone.

Lake Travis stopped the Badger momentum with a seven-play, 56- yard scoring drive that culminated in Aydam's 30-yard run.

The team added another touchdown with two seconds left in the half, when Gilbert hit Cohl Walla with a 5-yard score to give the Cavaliers a 45-7 advantage at the half.

The Badgers cut into the lead on their first possession of the second half, going 58 yards in five plays. Brown found Seth Fry with a 17- yard touchdown pass on which Fry went up over two defenders to make the catch.

Brown finished the game 14 of 28 for 174 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He was victimized by five drops.

Lampasas moved the ball well in the second half, but two drives were snuffed out on Brown interceptions.

The first came on a deep route where the receiver broke inside and Brown threw it outside, and the second was on a tipped pass.

The Cavaliers would add another touchdown and two field goals to run the score to 58-14.

Lampasas drove the ball inside the Cavalier 10 in the waning moments but came away with no points.

The Badgers are scheduled to play at Pflugerville Connally (4-2, 3-0) on Friday.

Connally is tied with Lake Travis atop the District 25-4A standings after beating Burnet 28-27 on Friday.
