The GFWC/TFWC Pierian Club met for its monthly meeting Oct. 9 in the home of Joan Milam, with Bobbie Joseph and Virginia Dodd as hostesses.
Twenty members were present. Mary Black Davis gave the invocation to open the meeting. Kim Garrett led the pledge to the flag.
Cherie Leavell introduced Bennie Bulloch, Lampasas Public Library Advisory Board member, who spoke about the Library Foundation of Lampasas Texas, which was created to support the library, and give patrons an opportunity to make sizeable donations to the facility.
Mrs. Leavell then introduced Library Director Shanda Subia who gave some statistics for September, which showed more than 5,000 people used the library during the month, and more than 1,000 used the 11 computers available to the public.
Ms. Subia also called attention to the 50 large-print books rotated among several libraries. They are shelved on the west wall of the Adult Fiction Section and will be there for four months, with a variety of titles available.
The librarian also discussed the Support our Troops project which collects basic items for service members stationed overseas, including toothbrushes, chapstick, baby wipes, books, toothpaste, shampoo and others. Items are boxed and mailed to a specific soldier. Ms. Subia read a thank-you letter for one box.
In her report, the library director discussed the twice-monthly storytime for preschoolers, with retired teacher Julia Phillips offering stories with a craft.
Ms. Subia also shared information about the continuous book sale, which has generated around $1,900 for the library.
President Sue Zane Faulkner conducted the club's business. Treasurer Crystal Hammett reminded members that money for cookbooks and gift wrapping is due.
Federation Counselor Pat Terry reported the Capitol District Fall Board Meeting is to be Oct. 23 in Hico, and the local club is to provide items for the Capital For Capitol fund-raiser at the meeting. Reservations are due today.
Art department chairman Jane McMillin reported on the picture of the painting by Matisse, "The Dance with Nasturtiums," which adorns the cover of the club's yearbook. She gave members a pop quiz, which generated information about how Matisse used color, line and multiple perspective to achieve the painting.
Next meeting is Nov. 13 in the home of Mrs. Terry with June Davis and Ms. Faulkner as hostesses.
Myra Wright, daughter-in-law of Mrs. Wright, will share her experiences as an Army wife during wartime.
