Garden club begins monthly meetings With 15 members present, L-M Garden Club of Lometa resumed regular monthly meetings with the serving of refreshments provided by hostesses Sue Shepperd, Janie Potts and Joyce Hightower. Sabrina McKenzie, president, introduced Faith Lester Jurek, a Star High School junior, who presented her Farm Bureau speech contest oral essay on "Free Enterprise and Agriculture," and answered questions from members on the subject. Mrs. McKenzie then welcomed first-time visitors Wanda Monroe and Linda Klose, and new members Debbie Miles and Phyllis Poehlmann. Kathryn and Robert Butler gave an interesting and informative slide presentation on wildflowers and described the myriad wildflower specimens they brought for display. Although it is not easy to raise wildflowers from seed, Mrs. Butler encouraged members to try planting them to renew the many flowers lost over the years due to urban development, road construction, pollution, drought and irresponsible harvesting of flowers along Texas roadways. In the business session, members voted to waive rental charges for the club building used by the Lometa Senior Center while extensive repairs were being made to the storm-damaged facility. Members also approved appropriation of funds to begin construction of walkways and a handicap access ramp for their building, the first step in completion of a long-term landscaping project headed by Sammie Leggett. She will present information on the project at the next meeting on Monday at 7 p.m. Eleanor Middaugh will share her expertise in raising herbs. Individuals interested in gardening and the club's civic activities are welcome to attend. |
