City initiates Christmas card program, contest

The city of Lampasas' new Christmas program, Lampasas Santa Village and Trail of Lights, was created to provide a Christmas setting for the community and to attract visitors during the holiday season.

For a successful program, Monty Blackmon, Parks and Recreation director, said steps are needed to expand the overall concept and continue to add features such as lighted displays, tree lighting, expanded Santa's Village, nativity scenes, lighted water features, decorated Christmas trees and other decorative elements.

Committee members have initiated a lighted Christmas cards program that will provide displays around W.M. Brook Park.

The concept is to develop partnerships with citizens and businesses within the community and in the process continue the program's growth, Blackmon said.

A new Christmas Card Contest will be offered this year. Participants must follow established guidelines to allow consistency with an approved theme.

All cards must be constructed on a full 4x8-foot sheet of plywood, either on one sheet of horizontal plywood or two vertical plywood sheets with gate-type hinges installed.

Plywood must be primed and painted with oil-based paint.

Cards must reflect a Christmas theme and be appropriate for public viewing.

Participants may design their own cards or use one of the examples provided by the city.

Cards may be donated to the city's Christmas program or they may be taken home after the holiday. All donated displays will become property of the city and will be utilized the following year.

The city will provide and install lights for the Christmas cards.

All entries should be delivered to the parks department at 906 S. Spring by Nov. 15. Entries will be judged on Dec. 8 at W.M. Brook Park.

For information, contact Blackmon at 734-1076 or Micky Tower, assistant parks director, at 734-1315.
