SPORTS SHORTS SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT A Care Giving Campaign will take place throughout the year in Lampasas and neighboring communities to benefit the Manuel Torrez Jr. Liver Transplant Fundraising Committee. Torrez, who was diagnosed with a liver disease, needs a transplant. He was born and reared in Lampasas and graduated in 1976 from Lampasas High School. He has been married to Kathy Charlene Welch, a Brownwood native, for 21 years. They have six children and four grandchildren. The couple now reside in Zephyr. Committee members state that $250,000 is needed for Torrez to be placed on the transplant list. A number of fund-raising events have been held with others planned. A two-day men's softball tournament is scheduled for Oct. 13- 14 at Turner Field in Lampasas. Food and refreshments will be available. For information on the event, contact Lori at (512) 459- 0901. GOLF TOURNAMENTS The Ninth Annual Republican Golf Tournament fund-raiser is scheduled for Saturday at Hancock Park Golf Course. The scramble format tournament will start with a continental breakfast at 7 a.m., with tee-off scheduled for 8 a.m. A hotdog lunch is scheduled for noon at the Pavilion, and a hole-in-one on a designated hole is worth $10,000. The price is $50 per player. For more information, call 556-6624. * The Highland Lakes Family Crisis Center has scheduled its 24th annual golf tournament for Oct. 20 at Delaware Springs Golf Course in Burnet. The four-person scramble is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start. An awards ceremony is scheduled for 6 p.m. along with a fajita dinner and live auction. HLFCC provides services for victims and survivors of family violence and sexual assault in Burnet, Llano, Blanco and Lampasas counties. The cost is $100 per player. Sponsorships are available at the Platinum ($2,000), Gold ($1,500), Silver ($1,000) and Bronze ($500) levels. Proceeds from the two-person scramble will be used for scholarships. The cost is $45 per person with a limit of 27 teams. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m., and the tournament will start at sunset. Cash and door prizes will be awarded. HVFD is accepting prize contributions and sponsorships from local businesses and individuals.
