Longtime Central Freight official dies
Mr. Hairston died Sept. 30 at Spring Oaks Nursing & Rehab. He was 79. He had been a member of First Street Church of Christ for 45 years. He was born Jan. 28, 1928, in Rockdale. After graduating as the class valedictorian from Rockdale High School, he enlisted in the United States military and served during the Korean War. After completion of his military service, Mr. Hairston started what would become a long career with Central Freight Lines Inc. He began his career as a local driver in Rockdale until he was promoted to the terminal manager at Lampasas in January 1962. He managed the local office until his retirement in 1986. From 1993 to 2004, Mr. Hairston worked for The University of Texas as a gate attendant at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium for Longhorn home football games. He was a longtime member of the Lions Club and served as president of the Badger Booster Club. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Jeanie Hairston; his son, Randy C. Hairston, and his wife, Melinda; four grandsons, Connor Hairston, Hunter Hairston, Cole Hairston and Jordan Hairston; and two step-grandsons, Scott Tucker and Jeremy Tucker. The family requested memorials be made to First Street Church of Christ Benevolent Fund. Arrangements by Sneed Funeral Chapel of Lampasas. |
