PEC board approves purchase of wind energy Pedernales Electric's Board of Directors has approved a contract with American Electric Power to purchase approximately 50 megawatts of renewable electricity produced by AEP's South Trent wind farm in West Texas. The purchase represents half of the farm's total output and is part of PEC's ongoing Green Works initiative. "One of the major goals of Green Works is to encourage the use of renewable technologies," said PEC Assistant General Manager Jeanell Davis. "This transaction is a major step in our efforts to help keep Texas green." PEC's board approved the agreement Sept. 17, but the 20-year contract will begin when the wind farm begins commercial operation at the end of 2008. PEC already offers electricity produced by renewable sources through its renewable power rate, which was reduced twice this year to encourage participation. Pedernales Electric's Green Works initiative also aims to advance environmental responsibility and conservation. The utility has introduced an online Home Energy Center to help members find personalized conservation advice. Information about PEC's renewable power rate or Green Works is at www.pec.coop. |
