Classics cruise to Nix

The old Nix Store was the perfect backdrop for classic cars during the recent classics cruise and picnic. An antique sign proclaims a time when gas was just 17 cents per gallon.
The Classics at the Classic held its first picnic-cruise as they headed to Nix earlier this month.

Nix, located about 12 miles west of Lampasas on FM 580, is home to an antique gas station, whose owner allowed the group to take photos next to the old-fashion gas pumps and eat lunch on the grounds.

Also on the site is a Nehi sign that hangs on the outside of the building that states: "Gas, 17 Cents Today."

Classics organizer Sharon Carrigan was amused by the sign. "I have never seen gas at 17 cents a gallon," she said. "When I started driving in 1977, the price was around 68 cents a gallon.

"I remember putting in about $5 a week in gas, and that would take me to work, cruising Key Avenue and circling the Dairy Cue (now Storm's Drive-In) and back again."

The lime green Plymouth is owned by Danny Britton, and the red Ford is owned by Butch Ball.

At the picnic, two new classics were welcomed to the group: a late-60s Camaro and a late-50s Studebaker.

Classics at the Classic gathers the first Saturday of each month in the back parking lot of Storm's in Lampasas.
