Downtown group forms committees

Newly appointed committee chairmen and volunteers were on hand Monday as the Vision Downtown Lampasas! project orientation took place at Lampasas City Council chambers.

Julie Johncox, Vision Downtown Lampasas! consultant of JP Solutions in Fort Worth, welcomed the gathering and expressed appreciation for each participant's commitment and effort. "This is a grassroots project, and we will get it done," she said.

The action plan was approved in August by the Lampasas Economic Development Corp. and Lampasas City Council after almost one year of research and planning.

The Downtown Task Force, appointed by the LEDC in October 2006, had developed the plan for downtown revitalization, with assistance from the Lampasas County Chamber of Commerce, the city of Lampasas, Lampasas County and Courtyard Square Association.

Vision Downtown Lampasas! chairman Amanda Wade has announced appointment of committee chairs to include Mike Adams, incentives; Fred Cummings, marketing and promotions; Dale DeShazo, housing; Sheryl Estes, economic restructuring; Nancy Gray, art; Richard Hammett, design and beautification; and Linda Nash, organiza- tion.

After a brief presentation on Main Street methods and goals, committee members were given copies of the action plan, and specific projects for each committee were outlined for the first year. Mrs. Johncox encouraged those present to stick to the plan. "You will have plenty to do, so don't take on extra projects -- this is an ambitious firstyear plan."

A vision map showing traffic flow, recommended signage and repetitive banners and growth opportunities was presented.

After a question-and-answer session, Mrs. Johncox noted the action plan calls for a public and private partnership. Grant monies will be accessed where available, but the days of "big money" are gone, she said. The task force will develop a fund-raising program to help cover project costs.

A formal announcement will be held Oct. 23 at the newly refurbished Mesquite Creek reception building on Second Street. The public is invited to attend.
