Zephyr feels Hornets' sting
The Hornets (1-1) will try to maintain that momentum when they play host to Rising Star in their home-opener at 7:30 tonight. In the win against Zephyr, senior quarterback Joe Michael Rivera completed 10 of 18 passes for 275 yards and six touchdowns, connecting with Brandon Faubion on four of those scores. Rivera also recorded three tackles, 73 return yards, and he floated a pooch kick the Hornets recovered. Lometa outscored Zephyr 37- 18 in the first half and responded with scores each time the opponent rallied for a second-half score. Zephyr outgained Lometa 573-513, but the Hornets rushed for 238 yards while holding Zephyr to 180. "The team did a great job of taking care of our business and not worrying about all the things outside of our control," Lometa head coach Wendell Bradley said. "We concentrated on the next play rather than focusing on the results of the previous play. "If we continue to improve, we'll be able to accomplish great things." Faubion finished with a gamehigh 182 receiving yards, and Toby Davis added 109 yards and two TD grabs. The Hornets used a balanced rushing attack to control the clock and set up Rivera's passing. Chuck Torres ran for 62 yards, David Cruz for 43, Bubba Salinas for 40, James Logsdon for 38 and Sam Pauley for 37. Torres and Cruz each found the end zone on the ground. Salinas led the defense with 11 tackles, an interception and an onside kick recovery. Dalton Parson registered 10 tackles and a sack, and Eric Belyeu had nine tackles and a sack. Belyeu also had 113 yards and a touchdown on three kick returns. James Smith and Faubion each recorded a sack. * Lometa JV 55, Zephyr JV 27 The Zephyrs pounded out 285 of their 300 total yards by way of the ground in a dominating home win on Friday. The defense held Zephyr to 233 total yards and recorded five sacks. Colt Maldonado and Curtis Crain each had two traps, and James Reyna, Ramiro Hernandez and Daniel Velez had one apiece. Hernandez and Crain each scored twice on the ground, and Cody Brister, Manuel Hernandez and Tommy Felan each scored once. |
