Democrats gather for Labor Day
Decorations were organized by Robin Gradel, with help from local Young Democrats, to include the traditional red, white and blue flags and bunting. The Hicks family -- Raymond, Lewvon and Bobby -- made the burgers, and Ellen McFarland provided homemade cookies. Those in attendance offered donations for their fare. The cake auction was a success, with more than $1,000 raised in 35 minutes. Gail Callahan organized the auction, and bakers donated the goodies. Several candidates and officeholders attended the Democratic Women's Association of Lampasassponsored event, to include Woody Jones, candidate for chief justice of the Third Court of Appeals, and Diane Henson, who won a seat on the Third Court of Appeals during the last election. Others who contributed short speeches for the party were Lampasas County Commissioner Jack B. Cox and Dale Henry, candidate for Texas railroad commissioner. Bill Perkison and Dian Rudd spoke about their roles as Democratic Election Committee representatives and answered questions. Ronnie Witcher served as master of ceremonies and led a special tribute to the late C.W. Burkes, former Lampasas County Democratic Party chairman, and his wife, Barbara. Witcher and KCYL radio provided music. The event drew more than 100 participants. The annual picnic has grown over the past few years, thanks to the members of the local Democratic Women's Association, which will celebrate five years of existence this month. Anyone interested in attending the monthly DWAL meeting is invited Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. to 405 Pecan St. for a special multipurpose gathering. Along with viewing the temporary art exhibition of T.J. Mabrey's works, "The Boat Show," those in attendance can help the club plan for a booth during the annual Herb/ Art Fest in October. A Dutch treat lunch of sandwiches and iced tea will be provided by My Girls, and a special birthday cake will be served to celebrate the club's anniversary. For more information, contact Mrs. Mabrey at 556-4919 or Betty Lindsey at 556-0636. |
