Highway litter In my 31 years with the federal government, I have had the opportunity to travel a great majority of Texas highways. It is my unofficial opinion that U.S. Highway 190 from Copperas Cove to Lampasas is the "trashiest" I have seen anywhere. Recently, someone dumped their trash on the highway in front of my entrance, Barbee Plumbing and Christie's used cars. I phoned the local TxDOT office to report this but to no avail. Employees at Barbee Plumbing finally had to pick up the trash, at Barbee Plumbing's expense. I was told by Barbee Plumbing they had found mail with the names of the person who dumped the trash. This was turned over to the Sheriff's Department, and they did nothing. They, in turn, turned it over to Copperas Cove police, who then did nothing. I thought if the guilty party were found, charges could be filed or at least make them pick it up. Then, approximately one week later, there was a wreck at the same location, and trash was scattered all over the highway. It remains there today. I phoned TxDOT in regard to the trash from the wreck and again to no avail. It is upsetting that people have such disregard for our highways, but it is just as upsetting that our public officials exhibit the same disregard by showing no concern. F.A. Taylor Kempner |
