Incumbent Wesley Crow fended off a challenge from Luther Hensley for the Place 6 seat on the Lampasas Independent School District Board of Trustees. Crow garnered 466 votes on Saturday to Hensley's 370. "I am excited to finish what we started. We worked hard to get the bond issue passed, and I wanted to get to see the construction finished," said Crow.

Sponsored by the Lampasas County Ministerial Alliance, the prayer breakfast gave participants a chance to join with Americans across the country as part of the annual National Day of Prayer.

Hybrid vehicles gain favor; flex fuel sales idle

While flex-fuel vehicles capable of running on ethanol have not gained much popularity in Lampasas County, electric-gas hybrids are beginning to attract buyers. Rising fuel prices prompted T.P. and Arlene Wingo to purchase a 2006 Toyota Prius, a hybrid vehicle with a gasoline engine and an electric motor.

The Board of Trustees of the Lampasas Independent School District will meet Monday at 6 p.m. at the District Administration Building to canvass votes from Saturday's election. Trustees also will reorganize the board and select officers for the 2008-09 year.

The annual Riata Roundup Queen Contest will be held in conjunction with the Lampasas Riata Roundup June 20-21 at Little Bear Ranch Rodeo Arena. Applications are available at Lampasas High School, middle school, Lometa School and Lampasas County Chamber of Commerce office and are due by May 23 to the chamber.

Adamsville Community Center's annual fish fry is May 16 at 6 p.m. at the community center. A Ruger M 77 Hawkeye 22/250 rifle will be raffled. Other items will be auctioned, and a bake sale will be held. Tickets for the fish fry are $8 per plate for adults, and $4 for children under 12. Rifle raffle tickets are $5 each or six for $25.

Summer school

National debt still growing

The interest payment on the national debt for 2007 was over $429 billion, totaling nearly as much as 2007 budgeted defense spending, and this should speak for itself as to the weight of this increasing national problem. Interest owed has risen from the $352 billion in 2005 to $405 billion in 2006 to $429 billion in 2007. These figures are from the U.S.

Funding cuts hamper CASA

Congress has cut victim assistance funds 22 percent over the past two federal fiscal years under the Victims of Crime Act. The administration's 2009 budget request would cut another 20 percent from VOCA victim assistance funding. The VOCA Fund is a separate account generated by federal criminal fines, forfeitures and special assessments, not taxpayer revenues.

Since before I could vote I have identified myself politically as a Democrat but never have I thought of Republicans so lowly as to believe that they hated America, despite how many times we have been let down by their administration in the previous years.

Mrs. Cassidy was born Sept. 5, 1915, in Lampasas County, the daughter of Ross O. and Mary Viola Lindsey Greer.

I recently read that the Bush administration has proposed allowing loaded firearms to be carried in national parks. As is always the case when guns are involved, controversy ensued. Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne proposed the new regulations last week that would allow people to carry a concealed weapon in some national parks and wildlife refuges.
