Esther Gail Newton died peacefully, surrounded by her family, on May 17, 2026, at the age of 83.
Gail was born on May 30, 1942, in Pryor, Oklahoma, to Charles Ralph Gibson and Eva Maurine Sutherland Gibson. She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, her brother, and her husband, Paul Newton Sr., whom she married on March 17, 1959.
As a military wife, Gail made a home for her family wherever life took them. Through every season and every move, she created warmth, stability and love for those around her. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother whose life was marked by service, creativity and generosity.
Gail was known for her many years of service as an officer in the Texas Rural Letter Carriers Auxiliary, where she served in numerous positions.
She was gifted in many ways: a talented seamstress, quilter, cook and “fixer extraordinaire.” If something was broken, Gail could repair it. If someone needed care, Gail was there. She had a thoughtful spirit that made everyone feel welcomed, loved and at home.
She is survived by her children Tricia Newton Witte and husband Ron Witte, Paul Newton Jr. and wife Jedith Newton, Kenneth Newton and wife Susan, and Martie Newton Bohannon and husband Brady; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
A family viewing will be held May 22 at 5 p.m. at Sneed-Carnley Funeral Chapel in Lampasas. Services will follow at 6 p.m.
Graveside services will be held at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery on June 2 at 9 a.m.
