James Scott Underwood, known to many as Scotty, was born on July 13, 1954, in Burnet. He died on July 23, 2026.
Services will be held at Sneed-Carnley Funeral Chapel in Lampasas on July 28 at 2 p.m., with visitation an hour prior. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
From a young age, Scotty embodied the honesty, hard work and loyalty that defined his life. He believed in family above all else, pouring energy and affection into those he cherished most.
Scotty was married to Patty Underwood for 37 years. He was a proud father to Beth Oestreich (Reece), Lorri Underwood and Vonzella Hammons (BF). To them and his grandchildren — Taylor Wilkins (Morris), Riley Oestreich, Nathaniel Schoepf, Addison Hammons and Scotty Hammons — he was more than a dad and Pawpaw; he was a guiding light, a steady hand and a wealth of wisdom.
He also had two greatgrandchildren, Ryder and Ainsley Wilkins, who loved coming to see their 'G-Paw.' He also leaves behind Annabelle Turner and Cameron Brack; his older brother, Steven Underwood; and nephew, Jamey Underwood (Ashley).
For 45 years, Scotty served as a superintendent for the McCarty Corp. He was a man to depend on and the person people turned to when something needed fixing or building.
Upon retiring, he brought a lifelong dream to reality by owning and operating Hilltop Gun Shop for 12 years. The shop became a gathering place where friends and new acquaintances were drawn in by Scotty’s stories and humor. Many who first arrived as customers left as close friends.
A true outdoorsman, Scotty was a passionate hunter and often recounted tales of his travels across the country in pursuit of adventure. Of all his hunting memories, some of the most treasured were spent with his friends, sons-in-law and grandson hunting in West Texas.
Scotty had a gift of craftsmanship. From taxidermy to recurve bows, knives and countless other treasures, his skill and creativity knew few limits.
Preceding him in death were his father, James Underwood; his mother, Vonzella Underwood; his sister, Melinda Burke; and his stepson, Lawrence Allbee.
