Last Friday, the tennis team hit the road to Ellison, but the match was cut short by some unexpected lightning.
“The kids had been playing for about two hours, and we got a warning of lightning within 10 miles of us,” head coach Kenneth Peiser said. “We look around and don't see much, but as we were leaving the clouds started to build and here come the winds.” “We were able to get almost all of our matches in, though.”
The Lampasas team swept the doubles matches, as they did the previous week against Pflugerville. They focused on coming to the net and winning with volleys.
“After doubles, singles players went on and kept up the good play,” Peiser said. “We finished all but two matches. Those we did not get to finish due to the lightning, which kept on coming so we had to call it.”
Elijah Copeland was in a close match at the boys’ number one spot and Clyde Ashfield was in a tight one at the number 2 spot, according to Peiser. “Both would have been good to finish and give them some good competition,” he said.
The closest matches played at Ellison were Brock Messinger’s singles match which he won 8-6, then his doubles match with Jacob Pronovost was an 8-4 win. Every other match was won by the Badgers 8-2, 8-1 or 8-0.
The team won 17-0 to give them a 3-1 start to the season. They will travel to Belton today, which will create a tougher matchup. It will be good for the players to get some experience, the coach said.
