Efforts to combat New World Screwworm continue

Federal and state agencies are continuing to prepare for the arrival of the New World Screwworm on U.S. and Texas soil.On Feb. 9, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott celebrated the completion of a U.S.-based sterile fly dispersal facility in Edinburg.

Fog hovers across the roadway

Fog settles in a low area on FM 580 west of Lampasas on Wednesday morning. Relatively high dew points and unseasonably warm mornings followed last weekend’s rain, but the county remains below its average rainfall for this point in the year.

TxDOT’s contractor will close the U.S. 183 bridge at Sulphur Creek for routine maintenance below the bridge.To safely complete this work, crews will conduct brief overnight closures of the bridge. Each closure is expected to last approximately 15 minutes and will occur between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Lampasas Democrats hold candidate forum

Democratic Party candidates for the District 31 congressional seat Justin Early, left, and Stuart Whitlow addressed voters during a forum Monday hosted by the Lampasas County Democratic Party at the former middle school cafeteria. Early voting has begun, and the primary election date is March 3.

The next American Red Cross Community Blood Drive will be March 10, from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at First Street Church’s Family Life Center, 201 W. First St.Appointments may be made online or through the Red Cross app.

Session slated on pond management

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will hold a Pond Management session March 3 at 1 p.m. in the county annex conference room, 409 S. Pecan St. in Lampasas. Cost is $20. Topics will include fish management practices -- such as for catfish shown here -- and aquatic vegetation management.
