The 24th Texas Cavalry was known as Wilkes’ Brigade, 2nd Texas Lancers, 2nd Regiment Carter’s Brigade. It was organized at Camp Carter near Hempstead on April 16, 1862. Col. Franklin Collett Wilkes was elected colonel.
