June wedding is planned
      Vernon and Lisa Simpson of Lampasas, and Steve Carroll of San Antonio announce the engagement of their daughter, Rebekah Kathleen, to David Lino Lara, son of Rene and Suzan Cruz of Haltom City, and Lino Lara of Fort Worth. The couple plan a June 12, 2010, ceremony at Adamsville Baptist Church.

      Air Force Airman Lisa M. Rodriguez graduated from basic military training at Lackland A.F.B., San Antonio. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills.

Garden club to observe 30th anniversary
      Browning Community Garden Club members held their monthly meeting, opening with the reading of “An Irish Blessing.” In a continuing theme study on shrubs, Koneta Saum spoke on the red-tipped photinia. A Valentine’s party was held for residents of Windcrest Nursing Center.

Project Grad events slated
      Project Graduation Committee for the Lampasas High School Class of 2010 continues to raise money for its end-of-the-school year event, an all-night pizza party at Austin Parks and Pizza, via chartered bus. Several Project Grad fund-raisers are scheduled. The annual dinner and barbecue is March 27 at AMVETS Post 80.

Angel Food ordering deadline nearing
      The final day to place orders through Angel Food Ministries at First Street Church of Christ is Sunday from 1-3 p.m. Orders with food stamps will be accepted. Food distribution will be March 27 from 9-11 a.m. in the church fellowship hall. Angel Food Ministries allows residents to purchase name-brand groceries at cut-rate prices.

Exhibition features Olympic torch bearer
      Did you know that Lampasas has a two-time Olympic torch bearer? Lampasas resident Gladys Dickison carried the torch for the 1996 Olympic Games held in Atlanta, and for the 2002 Winter Games held in Salt Lake City. A new exhibition at Keystone Square Museum takes a look at Mrs. Dickison’s experiences. “The thrill was indescribable,” she said.

Retired teachers tour LMS campus for Public Schools Week observance
      The Lampasas County Retired Teachers Association had its Texas Public Schools Week meeting at Lampasas Middle School on March 2 in the staff dining room/ workroom, which had been created in what was originally the old band hall. President Mary Casbeer welcomed everyone and conducted a short business meeting.

TV date set for 'Extreme Makeover' that involved Lampasas business
     An April 4 two-hour special of ABC’s television show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” will feature a Galveston County home constructed with roof and floor trusses donated by Lampasas Building Components. The show will begin at 7 p.m. Central time.

Brigades accepting youth, adult applications
      The Texas Brigades is accepting applications for its summer 2010 camps; both youth and adult are due April 1. Youth are taught leadership skills and natural resources conservation at the camps, each of which are limited to 20 to 30 students, ages 13 through 17, said Dr. Dale Rollins, AgriLife Extension Wildlife Specialist at San Angelo and the concepts originator.

      Depression and chronic mood disorders can manifest themselves through physical symptoms, said an expert at Baylor College of Medicine. “It’s something that is very commonly seen,” said Dr. Sanjay Mathew, associate professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at BCM.

County historical group sets plans
      The Lampasas County Historical Commission will meet March 22 at 3:30 p.m. at the courthouse. Plans are under way to celebrate San Jacinto Day on April 21, for a field trip to a historical cemetery and placing historical markers at several locations.
